No-Till Production of Irish Potato on Raised Beds

چکیده

INTRODUCTION In an extensive review of organic mulches applied on conventionally tilled (plow-disk) fields, Dutton (1957) concluded: 1) that organic mulches such ashay and straw often increasedboth yield and quality of Irish potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) and 2 ) that improved soil physical properties under the mulch, particularly lower soil temperatures and conservation of soil moisture, were responsible for the yield and quality enhancement. In these mulching studies, highest yield increases generally occurred in hot climates where temperatures were above optimum during tuber development and where soil moisture deficits are prevalent. Thus, applying organic mulches in hot, dry climates normally results in increased potato yield (Dutton, 1957). Although mulchinggenerallyretards growth and reduces tuber yield in cool, wet climates, yield of potato often increases in hot, humid regions, if provisions are made to assure adequate soil drainage. Under conditions of adequate soil moisture in hot climates, reduced soil temperatures under organic mulches can increase tuber yield and quality. However, many potato mulch experiments (Dutton, 1957) have clearly shown that, when heavy (thick) mulches are prematurely applied (at or soon after planting), slow emergence, poor stands, and stunted early growth often result. Because applying thick layers of organic mulches is economically prohbitive on large-scale commercial farms, researchers have assessed the potential of reducedtillage systems for production of Irish potato (Midmore, 1991;Lanfranconi et al., 1993; Hoyt and Monks, 1996). Although the results of reduced tillage systems have been encouraging, in most cases potato planted in flat, untilled, or strip-tilled soils have required conventional hilling practices to achieve yields equal to that of conventional tillage systems (Lanfranconi et al., 1993; Hoyt and Monks, 1996). In such cases, organic residues were either incorporated or buried, leaving bare soil which minimizes or even negates potential soil-cooling and moisture-conserving effects during tuber bulking.

Response of micropropagated potatoes transplanted to peat media to post-vitro inoculation with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi and soil bacteria

Positive effects of dual inoculation with some combinations of arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) and bacteria on the growth of micropropagated potato (Solanum tuberosum) transplanted to a peat-based substrate were found in three different cultivation systems — pots, greenhouse or shadowhouse beds. Some inoculation treatments, e.g. with Glomus etunicatum, Glomus fistulosum together with bacteri...

Diversity of Streptomyces strains causing potato scab disease in Hamedan province and their thaxtomin production potential

Hamedan province is one of the main potato growing areas in Iran. Potaoto scab disease caused by Streptomyces spp. is one of the prevalent and important diseases of potato in this provice. Potato tubers with symptoms of scab diseases including raised and deep or shallow pitted lesion were collected from potato growing area in this region. A total of 20 and 25 strains of Streptomyces were isolat...

Influence of Conservation Agriculture, permanent Raised Bed Planting and Residue Management on Soil Quality and Productivity in Maize-wheat System in Western Uttar Pradesh

Conservation agriculture in its version of permanent raised bed planting with crop residue retention has been proposed as an alternative wheat production system of western Uttar Pradesh. Therefore the present work was undertaken during 2008-2011 to compare permanent and tilled raised beds with different residue management under irrigated conditions. Permanent beds with residue retention resulted...

Effect of mycorrhiza application on plant growth and yield in potato production under field conditions. Zohrab Adavi 1*and Mahmoud Reza Tadayoun 2

The effect of mycorrhiza fungi was studied on growth and yield of potato (Solanum tuberosum L.) in Fereidoonshahr, Esfahan, Iran during 2013 growing season. The experiment treatments were arranged in a factorial design based on a complete randomized block design with three replications. Four phosphorus fertilizer levels of 25%, 50% 75% and 100% P recommended with two levels of Mycorrhiza: with ...
